sitar

   (see-TAHR) [Hindi] A musical instrument of India, similar to a lute, with an onion-shaped bowl and a long, broad neck that carries four strings to be played, and eleven tuned to the scale in use so that they may resound individually in sympathy when one of the four strings sounds its scale tone.
